ABC Cares Projects Highlighted in Two-Part Video

The overwhelming dedication that Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) chapters and members put towards improving their communities and helping those in needs has always been a proud piece of the association. Throughout 2012, hundreds of organizations and individuals benefited from the outpouring compassion of the projects completed, and a few were selected to be highlighted in the annual ABC Cares video.

‘Rising Hope’ for Veterans

For those who serve in the U.S. military, transitioning back to everyday life can be overwhelming. In Arizona, veterans facing unemployment and homelessness can seek assistance from the nonprofit group Esperanza En Escalante, or “Rising Hope,” which provides the housing and support they need to make it on their own again.

ABC Chesapeake Takes a Plunge for a Good Cause

The apprentices and staff from the ABC Chesapeake Shores chapter joined thousands of volunteers at the 17th Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge Jan. 26, where they braved the near-freezing Chesapeake Bay water to show their support for the Special Olympics of Maryland (SOMD).

A Lesson from the Big Leagues

The Connecticut Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) partnered with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) to give 200 kids a chance to learn from the best in the business. Participants came from all over the state to attend a one-day clinic in Milford, Conn., where they learned techniques and sportsmanship from 16 former professional baseball players.

ABC Indiana Helps Community Center Bring Toys to Children

Chapter staff and members of the ABC Indiana chapter received praise from a local charitable organization, the Shepherd Community Center, after donating toys to hundreds of children in need. At their annual Holiday Fest, members and staff were asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy which were taken to the Shepherd Community Center where local parents were given appointment times to come and shop for their children.

Volunteers Help Horticulture Center Blossom

When there is work to be done in the community, Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) Western Washington Chapter finds a way to put its skills to use. In September, the Bellevue, Wash.-based chapter teamed up with the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) and local volunteers to spruce up the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture.

Community Turns a House into a Home

After 15 years of serving the community’s at-risk youth, the Barr House at the San Mar Children’s Home in Boonsboro, Md., was long overdue for renovations and a fresh coat of paint. John Crawford, sales manager of Rentals Unlimited, Hagerstown, Md., noticed the wear and tear while touring the facility and contacted Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) Cumberland Valley Chapter to pitch the idea of a home makeover.
