Mold has always existed, both indoors and outdoors. However, increased interest in mold stems from a spate of lawsuits in recent years against building owners, designers, and contractors, alleging that the presence of mold in buildings caused illnesses in humans.
Large jury awards sparked increasing interest in mold litigation and media coverage. These awards also generated a response from insurance companies, most of which began excluding or limiting mold coverage from contractors’ policies. Not surprisingly, state and federal policymakers also reacted to the complaints involving mold.
ABC is working with owners, designers, contractors, insurance companies and policy makers to evaluate the true scope of the mold problem and to pose practical solutions for our members.
