Parts of West Virginia are facing a prolonged cleanup effort after widespread flooding killed 23 people, left an estimated 230,000 people homeless or temporarily displaced and prompted Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to declare a federal disaster. To support the victims of this natural disaster, ABC’s West Virginia Chapter (ABCWV) has established a flood relief program and is arranging for donations of labor, supplies and equipment to help the affected communities.

Monetary Contributions to the ABCWV Flood Relief Fund
To contribute to this fund, you can mail your donation to P.O. Box 3965, Charleston, W.V. 25339. All checks should be made payable to the ABCWV Flood Relief Fund. If you want to make a contribution over the phone or online using a PayPal account, contact Sarah Francke at (304) 346-8971, ext. 102.

All monetary donations will be delivered to flood victims in the form of grants to purchase supplies or through other forms of direct assistance. The ABCWV Executive Committee will oversee the disbursement of all funds dedicated to this particular effort.

Food and Supplies Donations

ABCWV is also seeking donations of food and supplies:

  • Cleaning supplies (bleach, disinfectants, trash bags, etc.)
  • Cleaning products (mops, brooms, shovels, rubber gloves, etc.)
  • Socks and underwear (new in package - all sizes)
  • Toiletries (soap, shampoos, toothpaste, deodorant, etc)
  • Infant and child care products (food, pack and plays, diapers, etc.)
  • Clothes (all sizes)
Donations can be delivered to any one of the major drop off points around the state, or directly to the ABCWV office in Charleston.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed in a number of locations where supplies are being dropped off and dispersed, where clean up crews are entering the communities to begin the long process of clearing debris and at a number of shelters that have been set up to house flood victims. The following news articles contain lists of locations around the state where you, your employees or your friends and family can volunteer.

Donated Labor, Building Supplies and Equipment for the Rebuilding Process
Although this is certainly needed now, ABCWV anticipates the need for help in affected communities for months, possibly years to come. If you are interested in donating labor, equipment or any other services from your company, contact Bryan Hoylman at ABCWV.

The staff at ABCWV will continue to monitor the situation and update ABC members on how they can help. If there is anything that you feel may be helpful that is not listed above, please contact the ABCWV office at (304) 346-8791 to discuss how to get your supplies or services into the hands of those who need them most.
