The 2014 Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) applications are now available and have been mailed to all ABC chapters and contractor members.

ABC’s STEP program recognizes the efforts of ABC members that consistently strive to achieve world-class safety performance company-wide and provides contractors with the tools to objectively analyze, develop, and evaluate safety and loss prevention programs, policies and procedures. Contractors are given a full, wide-ranging report on the nature of the company’s safety program through the industry-leading 20 Key Components questionnaire, which incorporates lagging indicator safety performance data with leading indicator use and self-assessment requirements.

Applications are evaluated and awarded Participant, Bronze or Silver status based on the applicant’s score on the 20 Key Components. STEP Gold, Platinum, and Diamond status are based on 20 Key Components scores, as well as incidence rates and Experience Modification Rates (EMR). Companies under 100 employees may use a 3-year incidence rate average, while companies under 50 employees may use a 5-year average.

STEP applications are accepted all year by ABC; however, to take part in ABC chapter safety events, applicants should submit a completed application package to their local ABC chapters by the deadlines listed in the STEP application book

Being a part of the STEP program allows members to apply for Accredited Quality Contractor status. Further, Gold, Platinum and Diamond recipients are eligible to apply for the esteemed National Safety Excellence Award, presented annually at the Excellence in Construction Awards ceremony, as well as the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CURT-CISE) award.
