2012 Projects

Greater Michigan Gives Back - The staff and members of the Greater Michigan Chapter of ABC took time away from the office and jobsite to give back to their community through a week of ABC Cares events.

Keeping the Focus on Kids - The staff of Bouchard Insurance are improving the lives of local children by contibuting in various ways to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Localizing a Nationwide Spirit of Giving -Zachry Corporation  is leveraging its nearly 60 jobsites across the country to improve local communities and support charitable initiatives.

Having a Ball - More than 800 members of the design and construction community came together for an evening of dinner and dancing at the biannual Builders’ Ball, which benefits several charities in the metro Washington, D.C., area.

Library Makeover Program Targets Schools in Need - Volunteers from Roche Constructors partnered with the Heart of America Foundation and Target to renovate and upgrade two elementary school libraries in Albuquerque and North Las Vegas.


2011 Projects

Raising Awareness for Autism - In September 2011, the SaharaCares Foundation hosted its seventh Autism Carnival with 550 autistic children and their immediate families attending for a total of more than 3,000 participants.

Contractors Embrace the Spirit of Giving  - During the excitement of the holiday season, the spirit of community service and volunteerism is especially strong among chapters and members of Associated Builders and Contractors.

Parade of Playhouses - Ten employees at Dallas-based AUI Contractors took a break from their heavy industrial and commercial construction jobs to put their skills to work on a different type of project: building life-size playhouses benefitting local children in foster care.

Honoring Veterans and Military Families - Diamond D. General Engineering President Spencer Defty combines a World War II veteran’s barbeque with a Folds of Honor Foundation fundraiser.

Constructing an Integrated Community -  Channing Mason, director of operations for Benning Construction, lends his skills and expertise on a new L'Arche facility in Decatur, Ga., which will provide a home for adults with developmental disabilities.  

Actively Aiding Charity - ABC members take on bike rides and relay races to raise money for important causes.

'Extreme' Park Cleanup - Volunteers from ABC's Metro Washington Chapter took on cleanup efforts at Rock Creek Park. Keeping natural areas safe and clean for everyone to enjoy in the bustling Washington, D.C. region has become an important mission for this chapter.

Volunteers Step Up to Offer Post-Tornado Relief - When a series of devastating tornados hit communities in and around Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Ala. in April 2011, members of Associated Builders and Contractors’ Alabama Chapterwasted no time figuring out how they could contribute to relief efforts.

An Improved and Upgraded Summer Camp - ABC's Pelican Chapter raised money and organized volunteers for the construction of a shower and bath facility at the Avondale Boy Scout Reservation.

A Hands-On Introduction - Members of Associated Builders and Contractors’ Inland Pacific Chapter are preparing youth for careers in construction by taking part in several events throughout the year that spark children’s and teens’ interest in the industry.

Handlebars for the Holidays - The ABC Chesapeake Shores and Florida East Coast Chapters both participate in "Handlebars for the Holidays," a community service program that raises money to give bicycles and helmets for local children each year at Christmas.

A Baseball 'Miracle' in Minnesota - Construction contractors and community members in St. Coud, Minn. came together to build a baseball field for wheelchair-bound children.

Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness - Employees of Balfour Beatty, an ABC member based in Fairfax, Va., volunteered at the Winterhaven Homeless Stand Down, a day-long event which offers medical and employment assistance to veterans living without shelter.

Supporting Native American Culture - The ABC Western Washington Chapter spent a day volunteering at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Centerin Seattle. Volunteers performed major structural repairs on the building, cleared the surrounding walking trails and created a memorial site around a statue honoring Bernie Whitebear, the center’s founder.

Helping Girls Get Back on Their Feet - Members of the ABC Greater Houston Chapter jumped at the chance to help renovate a resource center for displaced young women, owned and operated by their former chairman and his wife.  


2010 Projects 

Construction Rodeo Draws a Crowd - The ABC Keystone Chapter's annual Construction Rodeo drew a large crowd of construction professionals, apprentices and families to participate in friendly competition and raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Kids Go ‘Crazy’ for Construction - Volunteers from the ABC Southeast Texas Chapter gave young members of the Boys and Girls Club their first lesson in construction by helping them build a game called "Crazy Balls."

Spreading the Giving Spirit: From Marines to Make-A-Wish Mechanical Systems Inc. is always on the lookout for new community service opportunities. Adding to its history of working with Habitat for Humanity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club and the New Hampshire Food Bank, last fall the company sought out another worthwhile group to support: the U.S. Marine Corps.

Learning While Lending a Hand
- The apprentices of ABC's Golden Gate Chapter put their training hours to good use while providing some much-needed renovations to Shepherd's Gate, a resource center for displaced women.

Twenty-Five Years of Granting Wishes - ABC Saginaw Valley and the Make-A-Wish Foundation recently celebrated twenty-five years of granting the wishes of local children struggling with life-altering diseases.

Folds of Honor Foundation Headquarters Opens - The Folds of Honor Foundation and the ABC Oklahoma Chapter recently celebrated the grand opening of the Folds of Honor headquarters buildng in Owasso, Oklahoma.

An Inspired Beach House - Inspired by the courage of Justin Jennings, a young man who lost his life to cancer, ABC contractors built a house where families struggling with cancer can spend an enjoyable and relaxing week.

War Veterans Home at Last - "Home At Last," a venture between Habitat for Humanity and several Florida contracting groups, is working to build houses for wounded or disabled veterans returning home from abroad and their families.  

A New Spin on Service - Employees of Clark Construction Group and Atkinson Construction formed a cycling team and participated in various fundraising races. They helped raise money for The Yellow Ribbon Fund and the American Diabetes Association.

Color for a Cause - Volvo Rents is raising money for care packages for deployed soldiers and veterans by donating 50 percent the proceeds whenever construction contractors rent one of their patriotically-decorated pieces of construction equipment.

2009 Projects


Driving Hunger Out of Maryland - Cianbro employees in Maryland held a food drive and sponsored a golf tournament to make a donation of 600 pounds of food and $6,000 to the Maryland Food Bank.

Pint-Sized Effort Helps Family in a Big Way - Durr Heavy Construction, LLC organized a blood drive to benefit a co-workers' daughter fighting leukemia. Other members of the ABC Bayou and New Orleans chapters came together for the cause and donated blood in the young girls name.

Turning Tragedy Into Triumph - MSI Mechanical Systems of Salem, N.H., helped the Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity by installing new HVAC systems in a duplex after a devestating fire. Total costs of the donation exceeded $22,000.

Building a Foundation of Honor - ABC's Oklahoma chapter partnered with the Folds of Honor Foundation which raises money for scholarships for the children and spouses of military personnel killed or disabled in the line of duty. With the Foundation needing new headquarters, ABC members pulled together and secured donations of time and labor for 80 percent of the work.

Shoeboxes for Soldiers - For ABC Metro Washington's new community outreach initiative, Shoeboxes for Soldiers, members put together a box of items that will brighten the day of soldiers serving overseas. So far, 113 soldiers have received a box.

Recreation Center Sports New Look
- When the Arizona Builders Alliance decided to implement an Annual Volunteer Day in April 2008, members hit the ground running and unanimously selected the Mesa Association of Sports for the Disabled (MASD) to be their first beneficiary.

Laying the Foundation
- With five company offices in four states, the Hardin Construction Associates Charitable Foundation keeps the company's community involvement alive while allowing its 350 associates to choose what causes need the most support in their area.

A Knockout New Home
- More than 40 employees of C&S Companies in Syracuse, N.Y., pitched in to help build a new 3,500-square-foot, five-bedroom home featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition . The company also was heavily involved in the construction of the two-story, 2,800-square-foot gymnasium featuring a 24-foot by 24-foot regulation-size boxing ring.

A Hawaiian Wish Comes True
- ABC Western Washington's 25th Annual Dinner Auction raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Additionally, Laura, a Wish Child who benefited from the chapter’s previous fundraising efforts, spoke during the dinner about how Make-A-Wish allowed her to pursue her passion for photography while visiting Hawaii.

Family Farmhouse Gets 'Extreme' Facelift -
More than 75 workers from companies belonging to ABC's Central Michigan chapter helped rebuild a home for a family as part of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition .

Putting Family First
- When Milt Smith was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, 40 of his co-workers at Grimm Construction in Kansas City, Kan., pulled together and made numerous improvements on the Smith home.

A Home for a Hero - 29 members of ABC's Iowa chapter came together for a week to upgrade the home of Spc. Andrew Birzer and his family. Birzer spent many of the past 17 years deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2008 Projects

Protecting Their Town - Michael Fiore of Leonard S. Fiore, Inc. in Altoona, Pa. established Operation Our Town, a partnership between businesses and the community aimed at tackling the drug use and related violent crime happening in the area. The initiative has secured three-year financial commitments of more than $1 million.

Motorcycles, BBQ and $20,000 for Children - ABC of North Texas sponsored a Poker Run and raised $20,000 for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, which provides medical care to children without charging the patients' families a dime.

A Walk in the Park
- ABC Delaware chapter restored a park area and demolished an unsafe gazebo at Exceptional Care for Children, a residential health care facility that provides a home-like environment for children receiving medical care.

On the Wheels of Success - ABC member McGann Construction of Madison, Wisc. remodeled DreamBikes, a nonprofit store which fixes donated bikes and sells them at a price neighborhood residents can afford.

A Flood of Help - When a Minnesota family was unable to rebuild their home on their own after a devastating flood, ABC Minnesota chapter and members helped the family refurbish their house in just three months.

A Camp in Need - Keller, Inc. of Kaukauna, Wisc. partnered with the Fox Valley YMCA to build cabins and ship them to the Camp Nan A Bo Sho summer camp site, a place where children can learn new skills and gain an appreciation for nature.

Big Help for Little Boarders - ABC Georgia chapter helps rebuild a home for My House, a nonprofit organization that helps babies that need continuing care after leaving the hospital.

A New Room for a New Family - ABC Las Vegas chapter works with Rebuilding Hope to remodel a bathroom for two grandparents caring for their grandchildren.

School Enhancement Gets A-Plus - ABC Western Washington chapter participates in Community Enhancement Day and helped upgrade the property and playgrounds for Bailey Gatzert Elementary School in Seattle.

White Construction Surprises Veteran with a New Home - White Construction and American Military Family surprise a veteran who lost a leg in Iraq with a new, upgraded and fully-furnished home.

A Year of Giving - Last year, Skanska USA Building, Inc. participated in several community outreach activities nationwide - with one of the most ambitious series of projects being organized by Skanska's Blue Bell, Pa. office throughout the fall and winter.

S.I. Goldman Donates 25,000 Pounds of Food to Second Harvest - S.I. Goldman Co., Inc., a member of ABC Central Florida chapter, held their 11 th annual can drive during the 2007 holiday season to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, the area’s largest food distribution organization.

SKIHI Donates More than $250,000 to Children's Organizations - In and effort to give back to the organizations that helped his granddaughter, each year, Fort Worth-based SKIHI Enterprises, LTD hosts a golf tournament to benefit local and national charities.


McCarthy Employees Help Out Across California - Each year McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., a member of several ABC chapters across the U.S., allows its employees to take a day off work in order to use their skills and talents to aid other organizations in their communities.

Stevens Construction Donates Covered Arena for Therapeutic Riding Facility - Stevens Construction, Inc., a member of ABC’s Florida Gulf Coast chapter, Feb. 26 completed work on a new riding arena for Special Equestrians, a local non-profit program that provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons to mentally and physically disabled children and adults in Fort Myers, Fla.

Rising to the Challenge - ABC San Diego chapter helps its community rebuild following the wildfires that broke out across sounthern California last October.

Building an Extreme Dream - Paul Risk Associates, Inc. helps built a horse barn for a therapeutic riding facility on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

ABC's Metro Washington Chapter Helps Clean Up D.C. Schools - ABC's Metro Washington chapter and several member companies heeded D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's call to help buff and scrub local schools.
