The Safety Specialist is a multi-faceted role. This position is to be the recognizable face and voice throughout the entire association because of their desire and effort towards progress. This position will be a well-known leader within the construction community promoting safety and best practices for all workers. This position develops, implements, and delivers services that supports the association’s safety strategies. Further, this position is important to expand the overall value of ABC membership.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
- Responsible to maintain an in-depth current knowledge of OSHA/DOSH/Cal/OSHA/EM385 and other policies, rules and regulations, providing members with knowledge and updates.
- Monitor all current information on regulations and requirements related to workplace safety and health.
- Work with ABC’s communication’s people and processes.
- Generate monthly updates, reports, and content about safety activities for the association.
- Knowledge and ability to teach, mentor, and coach others.
- Assist with activities and all other duties as necessary and assigned.
Chapter and Trust’s Safety Needs
- Be Staff Liaison to ABC Safety Committee.
- Interact with ABC National’s Safety Committee and peer groups to gain insight, best practices, support and to better the association overall.
- Coordinate and schedule OSHA 30, First Aid, and CPR training for all Apprentices and Craft Students.
- Interact with Continuing Education to help ensure the efficient and effective delivery of appropriate safety training.
- Oversee the STEP program in its entirety to achieve goals outlined in ABC’s annual strategic plan and to:
- Ensure members participation in STEP;
- Plan, organize, and deliver STEP Awards luncheon (w/ assistance from Membership Department);
- Generate supplemental information and track data;
- Use STEP data to advance safety programs or address members’ safety needs; and
- Act as liaison with ABC National providing members with assistance in completing STEP applications.
- Promote participation in ABC Safety Academy & maintain credentials to teach it.
- Knowledge, credentials, and ability to provide OSHA, Cal/OSHA, First Aid and CPR training.
- Responsible for recording all spreadsheets and documentation from applicable safety classes (i.e. CPR, fork lift) for ABC SoCal employees.
- Plan, organize and deliver Safety Roundtables and other safety events.
- Create collaborative relationships with the safety community attending meetings as ABC’s safety representative.
- Available on weekends and after hours where such ABC events and functions occur.
- Build strategic partnerships with key groups within the construction and safety communities.
- Identify state/federal grant opportunities for in the field of safety.
- Build important member relationships that lead to companies’ more active involvement in ABC networking events and other overall association activities.
- Support the Merit Training Trust, ABC of CA and ABC’s Government Affairs and Political Advocacy efforts by reporting statistics, supporting member engagement and assisting with legislation review when requested.
Member’s Safety Needs
- Visit ABC construction companies and get to know their internal safety contacts. Maintain a list of contact information for routine communications and updates.
- Provide general safety guidance, information of rule or regulatory updates; proactively, upon request, and provide guidance with compliance questions.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with members to ensuring their understanding and that they value ABC’s Safety Services and educational content.
- Use ABC’s STEP program and evaluation tool as a point of entry to learn companies individualized safety challenges and identify the ways to correct those deficiencies.
- Assist members with OSHA, Cal/OSHA inspection; act as Employer Representative when requested (This is an add-service with additional fee to members.)
- In addition to creating IIPP, safety programs, training certification matrix and other templates to provide members, possess the knowledge and ability to assist in customizing and implementing their own written safety program(s) and safety manual(s).
- Using available materials, make “Toolbox Talks” available and promote to members.
- Assist members with completing their OSHA 300 and 300A Logs.
- Assist members with their Safety Meetings and other various requests.

- Ability to manage multiple projects independently
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or other related fields; and/or
- 4+ years of experience within the construction industry specializing in occupational health and safety
- Certification(s) and credential(s) required (for example: OSHA, CSP, CHST, EM 385-40, etc.)
- Excellent time management, interpersonal, and communication skills
- MS Office proficiency

This position is performed in a typical office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. This position may be performed by working remotely or at out-of-office locations, such as on construction jobsites or contractors’ business offices.
