How BIM Can Create a Safer Jobsite

In the construction industry, safety should be the number one priority on every jobsite and, with the increased use of new technology such as BIM, the industry is finding ways to not only reduce onsite injuries, but to reduce the overall construction schedule at the same time.

According to a new report from McGraw Hill titled ,“Safety Management in the Construction Industry SmartMarket Report,” when BIM is incorporated into a project, it helps increase employees' safety awareness by:
  • Providing an easy-to-understand visual representation of where they’re working--it helps them map out where the hazards are and the phases of work going on each day.
  • Identifying potential hazards with 4D scheduling, which makes it easier to plan construction activities and coordinate crews for maximum safety.
  • Increasing preparation for each task by easily identifying them with BIM instead of listing the project’s tasks as a whole, making it easy for each worker to understand what is going on in the areas he is working, not the whole building at once.
In addition, the report found that, in many cases, implementing BIM and reducing injuries resulted in up to three weeks or more cut from the estimated construction schedule.
