ABC's Construction Management Competition (CMC) is the hallmark competition that promotes careers in construction management.  The competition is sponsored and supported with the help of ABC members. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that will bring out the best in each team; encourage dialogue among the students; and foster the team spirit as students rise to meet this challenge. The CMC is designed to challenge construction knowledge, time management, organizational and presentation skills. The competition features teams of four college and university students testing their project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills.  Come prepared to have fun, challenge other students and demonstrate your ability to think on your feet.

2017 Competition Highlights

ABC student chapter members from colleges and universities across the nation came to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the 2017 ABC Construction Management Competition, held during the 2017 ABC Leadership Week. This year the competition drew competing teams from 20 colleges and universities across the United States. The Construction Management Competition project focused on the construction of the Universal Aventura Hotel— a 17-story structure with 600 guestrooms, lobby and public and support spaces. The project consisted of structural and architectural concrete, curtainwall glazing and high-end finishes; and related mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and building systems. The hotel tower is adjacent to a precast parking garage structure being constructed under a separate contract—which added extra coordination challenges to the project’s scope.

Each team was required to provide a price and a technical proposal before competing in a spontaneous exercise led by the Competition Committee. Then the top teams were interviewed by the committee.

Winners were selected in four categories:

  • Estimating
  • Project Management and scheduling
  • Safety
  • Quality Control

An overall winner was selected based on their success in all of these areas.
