Please note, ABC's news releases on state construction unemployment have been temporarily paused. 

In addition, ABC produces the Construction Backlog Indicator, the only economic indicator that reflects the amount of work that will be performed by commercial and industrial construction contractors in the months ahead, and the Construction Confidence Index, a diffusion index that signals construction contractors’ expectations for sales, profit margins and staffing levels. ABC and Tradesmen International Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement

Washington, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced it has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Tradesmen International, the construction industry’s premier source for craft professionals and labor-related services, which will help contractors maximize productivity per dollar of labor. The agreement became effective May 1, during ABC’s 28th annual National Craft Championships in Birmingham, Ala., which Tradesmen International sponsored.

Electrician Lloyd Evans Named ABC Craft Instructor of the Year

Employment Report Surpasses Expectations in April

The U.S. construction industry gained 32,000 jobs in April, according to the May 2 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Nonresidential construction segments added 8,100 jobs in April, up from the 5,700 jobs (revised) added in March, while the residential sector continued to build momentum, adding 13,100 jobs for the month. Heavy and civil engineering led the way by adding 10,500 jobs in April. The segment has added an impressive 34,900 jobs in the past 12 months.

Nonresidential Construction Spending Inches Down in March

Nonresidential construction spending inched down in March, making it the third consecutive month in which spending declined. Nonresidential construction spending fell 0.1 percent on a monthly basis in March but has risen 4.4 percent on a yearly basis according to a May 1 release by the U.S. Census Bureau. Spending for the month totaled $568.5 billion on a seasonally adjusted, annualized basis. Read the rest of entry »

Nonresidential Fixed Investment Declines 2.1 Percent in Disappointing First Quarter GDP Report

Nonresidential fixed investment decreased 2.1 percent and residential fixed investment fell 5.7 percent during the first quarter, according to an April 30 release by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Overall, real gross domestic product (GDP) expanded just 0.1 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rate) during the first quarter of 2014 following a 2.6 percent increase in the fourth quarter of last year.

Construction Industry Reminded of High Effective Rate on Tax Day

As the construction industry rebounds amid tepid economic growth, many Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) members are greeted with a significant tax increase this week. The contractors who emerged from the recession already paid thehighest effective tax rate of any sector, and now they face even higher taxes thanks to rising marginal rates, reinstated limits on deductions, and new surtaxes on wages and income stemming from the health care law.

Construction Materials Prices Up 0.5 Percent in March

Construction materials prices expanded 0.5 percent in March and are up 1.1 percent from March of last year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s April 11 producer price index release. Nonresidential construction materials prices are up 0.4 percent for the month and are 1 percent higher than the same time one year ago.

ABC Supports House Effort to Halt Ambush Election Proposal
