DOL Extends PAID Program for Six Months

On Oct. 9, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division announced a six-month extension to its overtime and minimum wage compliance initiative, the Payroll Audit Independent Determination program. According to a WHD news release, the PAID program helps workers receive more back wages due in an expedited manner, without having to wait for lengthy investigations to conclude or court cases to resolve. Election 2018 and the Merit Shop: Everything You Need to Know

ABC is pleased to announce the launch of a WeBuildAmerica.com, a brand-new, mobile-friendly website focused on the fast-approaching November elections. The site features helpful videos and information on the importance of voting, key issues in this election cycle, how to register to vote and personalized voter guides. ABC Comments on OSHA’s Electronic Injury Reporting Proposal

On Sept. 28, ABC submitted comments to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on its recent proposal to remove certain provisions of the 2016 Electronic Injury Reporting and Anti-Retaliation final rule, officially titled Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses. August Construction Unemployment Rates Down in 49 States Year Over Year

Estimated August construction unemployment rates fell nationally and in every state except Colorado on a year-over-year basis, according to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released by ABC. The August 2018 not seasonally adjusted national construction unemployment rate fell 1.3 percent from a year ago to 3.4 percent. At the same time, the construction industry employed 287,000 more workers nationally compared to August 2017, according to BLS statistics. Read the rest of entry »

Celebrate Careers in Construction This October!

October is Careers in Construction Month, creating the perfect opportunity to highlight the many career opportunities within the construction industry—especially given the currently estimated 500,000 open construction positions in the United States. ABC National has developed outreach materials including a draft letter to the editor, social media assets to share and educational resources to help ABC members and volunteers promote Careers in Construction Month in local markets throughout the month. New Video: See Highlights of the 2018 Construction Management Competition

Sixteen teams of four undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide put their construction project leadership skills to the test during ABC’s annual Construction Management Competition at ABC Convention 2018 in Long Beach, Calif. Teams were assigned to manage the completion of the same mock project over two days. First-, second- and third-place awards in five categories were presented to the winners at the Careers in Construction Awards at the convention’s conclusion on March 22. Watch highlights here! Nonresidential Spending Reaches New High in August

National nonresidential construction spending expanded 0.7 percent in August to its highest level since the U.S. Census Bureau began the data series in 2002, according to an ABC analysis. Total nonresidential spending stood at $762.7 billion on a seasonally adjusted, annualized rate in August, which represents an increase of 8.4 percent compared to one year ago. Private nonresidential spending fell 0.2 percent in August largely due to a 1.3 percent decline in power-related spending and public nonresidential spending increased 2 percent. Leading into November Elections, House Passes Tax Reform 2.0

On Sept. 27 and 28, the U.S. House of Representatives passed three bills (H.R. 6757, H.R. 6756 and H.R. 6760) that comprise the Tax Reform 2.0 package. ABC key voted these three bills and appreciates the important work of the House in moving these bills forward and building on the successes of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. These bills now move to the Senate, where their fate will likely be determined after the November elections by whichever party is in control of the Congress in 2019.  Read the rest of entry »
