2012 Democratic Party Platform, which was formally adopted by convention delegates on Sept. 4 in Charlotte, N.C., launches a direct attack against workers’ rights. Language in the platform states: “We will fight for labor laws that provide a fair process for workers to choose union representation.” However, the next sentence states: “We will continue to vigorously oppose ‘Right-to-Work’ and ‘paycheck protection’ efforts, and so-called ‘Save our Secret Ballot’ measures whenever they are proposed.”

Delegates at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., Aug. 28, formally adopted the party’s national platform. Contained in the 54-page document is language that “demands an end to project labor agreements.” In addition, the platform calls for the repeal of the Davis-Bacon Act, “which costs taxpayers billions of dollars annually in artificially high wages on government projects.”

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act, health insurance issuers are required to spend a minimum percentage of their premiums, called a medical loss ratio (MLR), on health care and health care quality improvement activities. Health insurance issuers that do not meet this minimum, which is at least 80 or 85 percent of their premiums, must pay a rebate to consumers.

Capping off ABC’s celebration of craft training for the 75th anniversary of the passage of the National Apprenticeship Act, ABC is reminding its members that in November 2011, ABC updated its National Model Guidelines for Apprenticeship Standards to allow distance learning; competency- and technology-based language; a hybrid and interim credential carpentry program; and reduce payment of benefits as part of the wage and fringe benefits ratios.
