Anti-Merit Shop Proposal Allowed On Michigan Ballots By State Supreme Court

The Michigan Supreme Court Sept. 5 ordered a proposal be placed on the statewide ballot that would negatively impact the merit shop construction workforce by nullifying the ban on government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) and preventing Michigan from becoming a right-to-work state, among other changes.

Democrats Come Out Against Workers' Rights

The 2012 Democratic Party Platform, which was formally adopted by convention delegates on Sept. 4 in Charlotte, N.C., launches a direct attack against workers’ rights. Language in the platform states: “We will fight for labor laws that provide a fair process for workers to choose union representation.” However, the next sentence states: “We will continue to vigorously oppose ‘Right-to-Work’ and ‘paycheck protection’ efforts, and so-called ‘Save our Secret Ballot’ measures whenever they are proposed.”

GOP Demands an End to Project Labor Agreements

Delegates at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., Aug. 28, formally adopted the party’s national platform. Contained in the 54-page document is language that “demands an end to project labor agreements.” In addition, the platform calls for the repeal of the Davis-Bacon Act, “which costs taxpayers billions of dollars annually in artificially high wages on government projects.”

Navy Mandates A PLA On Washington Construction Project

ABC is strongly opposing a decision by the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest to mandate that contractors use a project labor agreement (PLA) on the construction of a $450 million to $550 million explosives handling wharf at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington. 

Navy Decides Against Mandating PLAs On Guam Construction Projects

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) recently announced a decision not to mandate project labor agreements (PLAs) on billions of dollars worth of construction projects on Guam. NAVFAC, which is responsible for all Guam military construction contract administration for the Department of Defense (DOD), reached this decision after soliciting feedback from the construction industry, including ABC, on the potential use of PLA mandates.   

ABC Hightlights Need For Regulatory Reform In letter To House Committee

ABC sent a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman outlining the most egregious existing, proposed and upcoming federal regulatory activity that is detrimental to ABC members and the construction industry. ABC sent the letter in response to a request by Issa to 150 companies, trade groups and think tanks requesting information regarding regulations hindering job growth in the industry.
