A Lesson from the Big Leagues

The Connecticut Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) partnered with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) to give 200 kids a chance to learn from the best in the business. Participants came from all over the state to attend a one-day clinic in Milford, Conn., where they learned techniques and sportsmanship from 16 former professional baseball players.

“The players made it a point to teach the kids about the dedication it takes to be great at something,” says ABC Connecticut Chapter President Lelah Campo. “They also talked with them about work ethic and having a positive attitude.”

Throughout the day, the kids split up into groups and went to stations led by a former MLB player to learn about different aspects of the game, including pitching, throwing, batting, running, bunting and catching.

“It was fascinating to see the kids stand out in different areas of the game,” Campo says. “The parents lit up when they saw their kids playing.”

The day ended with an autograph signing session with some of baseball’s legends, including Mike Pagliarulo, who won the 1991 World Series with the Minnesota Twins; George Foster, a five-time all-star; and Steve Rogers, the winningest pitcher for the Montreal Expos.

To raise money for the clinic, members of the ABC Connecticut Chapter—including Viking Construction, KBE Building Corporation and Sarazin General Contractors—paired up with the former MLB players for a celebrity golf tournament.

“The event couldn’t have happened without the support of our member companies,” Campo says.

After such a successful weekend, the MLBPAA expressed interest in working with ABC again at its annual Construction Rodeo charity event.

“Next time, our members can teach the baseball players about the construction industry and what they do best,” Campo says.
