Self-funded and "partially self-funded" healthcare financing mechanisms are gaining popularity with employers, especially those with more than 50 active benefits eligible employees. This Webinar will briefly review the history of employer sponsored health insurance financing and compare self-funded to fully-insured. Contractors who are exploring  the  value for health care spend, wish to gain additional claims utilization visibility and simplify administration of all benefits offered are looking to these solutions. 

Self-funded health plans are governed by federal law (ERISA), therefore, many individual State mandates and taxes are reduced or eliminated. Self-funding also provides employers with unprecedented visibility into where dollars are being spent and how to positively impact future employee wellness.

Even if an employer has volatility in their workforce (seasonality) or does prevailing wage work, a partially self-funded plan may still be an option provided it is established with a provider who is experienced in designing and managing such plans.  As vice president of business development, Nathaniel Peniston is responsible for identifying and expanding Fringe Benefit Group’s strategic partnerships. The firm partners with payroll and human resources information systems (HRIS) providers, national broker dealers, insurance brokerage firms and trade associations. 
Fringe Benefit Group’s proprietary platform is designed to effectively enroll and administer benefits to hourly employees. The firm targets two niche market segments using two distinct brands:  The Contractors Plan ( is for employers subject to government contract requirements, specifically the Davis-Bacon and Service Contract Acts. The American Worker ( is a turnkey solution that provides hourly and part-time workers, especially in the staffing, hospitality and retail industries, with ACA-compliant benefits. 

Peniston has nearly 20 years of insurance, financial services and employee benefits industry experience. Most recently, he served as  vice president of specialty benefits and led the product development of ancillary employee benefits coverage for the firm. Prior to joining Fringe Benefit Group, Peniston was a large group sales executive in Humana's central Texas market office, where he was a key catalyst for the region’s exceptional membership growth. He has consulted with employers and brokers on strategies and trends for claim cost management and healthcare reform, and served as subject matter expert for major medical, dental, vision, life, disability and workplace voluntary benefits. Prior to working with Humana, he held roles in client acquisition and retention for Fisher Investments of Woodside, CA, one of the world's largest independent investment advisory firms.

Peniston holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami.
