First Quarter 2013 CBI Declines 1.1 Percent

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today reports its Construction Backlog Indicator (CBI) declined 1.1 percent during the first quarter of 2013 and now stands at 7.9 months. Despite the quarterly decline, CBI is still 7 percent higher compared to one year ago. CBI is measured in months and reflects the amount of commercial and industrial construction work under contract, but not yet completed.

Construction Materials Prices Down 0.1 Percent in April

National construction materials prices slipped 0.1 percent in April, according to the May 15 producer price report by the U.S. Department of Labor. Year over year, construction materials prices are up just 0.4 percent. Nonresidential construction materials prices decreased 0.1 percent for the month and are down 0.4 percent over the last 12 months.

U.S. Appeals Court Invalidates NLRB Poster Rule

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today welcomed a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to invalidate the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) “notification of employee rights” notice posting rule. A three-judge panel struck down the rule on the grounds that the NLRB had overstepped its authority under law. ABC General Council Maurice Baskin, a shareholder with Littler, argued the case before the appeals court.

ABC Announces 2013 Craft Instructor of the Year

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced Anthony Ayotte, craft training manager for the Cianbro Institute, Pittsfield, Maine, as its 2013 Craft Instructor of the Year. Ayotte received this honor May 3 during ABC’s 21st Century Workforce Development Conference in Birmingham, Ala.

ABC Announces Winners of its Construction Management Competition

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced the winners of its 13th annual Student Chapter Construction Management Competition during the 21st Century Workforce Development Conference, April 30 - May 3 in Birmingham, Ala. Teams of students from 14 colleges and universities across the nation competed for more than $6,000 in cash and prizes, as well as the coveted “Construction Management Champions” title.

Construction Loses 6,000 Jobs in April

The construction industry lost 6,000 jobs in April according to the May 3 employment report by the U.S. Department of Labor, but the unemployment rate decreased to 13.2 percent, down from 14.7 percent in March and 14.5 percent in April 2012.

Nonresidential Construction Spending Slips 2.9 Percent in March

The nation’s nonresidential construction spending declined 2.9 percent in March, according to the May 1 construction spending report by the U.S. Census Bureau. On a year-over-year basis, total nonresidential construction spending is down 1.2 percent, indicating that recovery continues to elude this segment of the economy. Total nonresidential construction spending stands at $555.08 billion on an annualized basis.
