House Approves Measure That Ensures Open Competition On Federal Defense Projects

Washington, D.C. – By a bipartisan vote of 211 to 209, the U.S. House of Representatives today passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2013 (H.R. 4310) that prohibits federal agencies from mandating anti-competitive and costly project labor agreements (PLAs) on federal construction contracts authorized by the NDAA.

ABC Applauds Amendment To Ensure Fair And Open Competition On Military Construction Projects

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations passed an amendment to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2013. The amendment, offered by Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), prevents federal agencies from requiring contractors to sign anti-competitive and costly project labor agreements (PLAs) as a condition of winning federal construction contracts.

Construction Backlog Declines 5.4 Percent In The First Quarter Of 2012

Washington, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today released its Construction Backlog Indicator (CBI) for the first quarter of 2012. CBI declined 5.4 percent from the previous quarter, dipping from 7.8 months to 7.4 months, but is slightly higher compared to the first quarter of 2011. CBI is a forward-looking economic indicator that measures the amount of construction work under contract to be completed in the future.

National Trade Groups Team Up To Create A Drug- And Alcohol-Free Construction Industry

Washington, D.C. – Five of the nation’s largest construction trade associations have teamed up to form the Construction Coalition for a Drug- and Alcohol-Free Workplace (CCDAFW). The coalition’s mission is to create a drug- and alcohol-free construction industry by providing companies and organizations with the resources necessary to implement drug- and alcohol-free policies into their business practices.

ABC Announces Winners Of Its Construction Management Competition

Washington, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced the winners of its 12th annual Student Chapter Construction Management Competition during the 2012 ABC EdCon and Expo, April 24-27 in San Antonio. Teams of students from 25 colleges and universities across the nation competed for more than $6,000 in cash and prizes, as well as the coveted “Construction Management Champions” title.
