Right to Work Law Signed in Michigan

ABC commended Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) and lawmakers on Dec. 11 after he signed into law a new Right to Work bill that will protect workers in the state from being forced to pay union dues as a requirement of employment.

Appeals Courts Hears Oral Arguments on NLRB Recess Appointments

A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., heard arguments Dec. 5 in one of 14 lawsuits on whether President Obama violated the Constitution in January when he made recess appointments to fill three NLRB vacancies while the Senate was in session.

House Republicans Support Blocking NLRB Notice Posting Rule

Twenty Republicans from the U.S. House of Representatives Dec. 5 filed an amicus brief in a federal appeals court in support of efforts to overturn an NLRB regulation that would require employers to post a notice displaying a biased list of employee rights under the NLRA.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are requesting comments from the construction industry about the potential use of government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) on two large-scale federal projects in Maryland and California.

Two New Taxes in Health Care Law Become Effective Jan. 1, 2013

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department issued proposals that will implement two taxes in the health care law on Jan. 1, 2013: the onerous 3.8 percent Net Investment Income Tax and the 0.9 percent Additional Medicare Tax. These taxes will heavily impact many merit shop contractors.

Don’t Raise Taxes on Businesses, Groups Tell Congress

ABC joined 39 other organizations Nov. 27 in sending a letter to leaders in the Senate and the House urging them to avert the looming fiscal cliff of expiring tax provisions and automatic spending cuts that will effectively raise taxes on the majority of small businesses next year.

ABC and Coalition Call on Congress to Stop Scheduled Estate Tax Hike

As part of the Family Business Estate Tax coalition (FBETC), ABC Nov. 15 sent a letter to members of Congress urging them to pass legislation addressing the estate tax before the end of the year. Barring congressional intervention, the resurgent estate tax rate and diminished exemption would saddle thousands of family-owned businesses with a crippling tax increase.
