Don’t Raise Taxes on Businesses, Groups Tell Congress

ABC joined 39 other organizations Nov. 27 in sending a letter to leaders in the Senate and the House urging them to avert the looming fiscal cliff of expiring tax provisions and automatic spending cuts that will effectively raise taxes on the majority of small businesses next year.

ABC and Coalition Call on Congress to Stop Scheduled Estate Tax Hike

As part of the Family Business Estate Tax coalition (FBETC), ABC Nov. 15 sent a letter to members of Congress urging them to pass legislation addressing the estate tax before the end of the year. Barring congressional intervention, the resurgent estate tax rate and diminished exemption would saddle thousands of family-owned businesses with a crippling tax increase.

Obama Shuts Out Small Businesses From Fiscal Cliff Talks

President Barack Obama will be holding a summit Nov. 16 at the White House with congressional and corporate leaders to discuss the impending year-end tax increases and spending cuts, known as the fiscal cliff. In a Nov. 14 statement, ABC expressed concern over the troubling exclusion of small businesses from the summit.

USACE Issues PLA Survey for Project in Washington

Michigan Voters Overwhelmingly Reject Anti-Merit Shop Proposal

By an 63-37 margin, voters in Michigan Nov. 6 overwhelmingly rejected a proposal on the statewide ballot that would have negatively impacted the merit shop construction workforce by nullifying the ban on government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) and preventing Michigan from becoming a right-to-work state, among other changes. MeritChoice Offers Free Flexible Spending Account Plan Amendment

For plan years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2013, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act imposes a $2,500 limit on annual salary reduction contributions to health Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) offered under cafeteria plans. This is a reduction from the current limit of $5,000.

Health Care Law Employer Reporting Required On 2012 W-2 Forms

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires employers that issue more than 250 W-2 forms to report the cost of health care coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan on each employee’s 2012 W-2 form, which generally are required to be provided to employees in January 2013.
