On Nov. 29, President Trump delivered a strong defense of reducing the tax burden on businesses of all sizes in his “Bring Back Main Street” Speech in St. Charles, Mo. Tax Reform Moving on Capitol Hill

On Nov. 13, the U.S. Senate began the first day of an expected four-day process to amend and approve their version of tax reform legislation. The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on their version of the bill on Thursday, Nov. 15. If both chambers pass their respective bills, conferees will be designated to negotiate an agreement between the House and Senate versions, which currently include a number of significant differences.  READ MORE

Treasury Department Report: Construction Faces Highest Tax Burden

New analysis from the U.S. Department of the Treasury shows that the construction industry pays the highest effective tax rate—the percent of income businesses actually pay in taxes—of any sector of the economy. According to the report, the typical construction company faces an average effective federal tax burden of 30.3 percent, well above the 23.3 percent average for all US businesses. READ MORE

ABC National Tax Panel Hits Capitol Hill

On Nov. 17, the ABC National Tax Advisory Group (TAG) gathered in Washington, D.C., to advocate for the tax priorities of merit shop contractors and the broader construction industry. TAG members from the Eastern Pennsylvania, Florida East Coast, Central Florida, and Georgia chapters were in attendance as the group met with senior staff representing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the Senate Finance Committee, and key members of the House Committee on Ways and Means.

NLRB Uproots Decades-Old Standards in Joint Employer Ruling

ABC released a statement in response to the National Labor Relations Board’s Aug. 27 ruling in the Browning-Ferris Industries of California case, which redefines who qualifies as a “joint employer” under the National Labor Relations Act. ABC has been a vocal opponent of these changes for potentially imposing unnecessary barriers to and burdens on contractor and subcontractor relationships throughout the construction industry.
