The Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) issued a proposed rule that would set a national hiring goal for federal contractors to employ workers with disabilities, in addition to requiring more recordkeeping and strengthening affirmative action policies. 

The OFCCP is asking for comments on the proposal, which would require federal contractors to set a goal of having persons with disabilities comprise at least 7 percent of their workforces. According to the OFCCP director, the agency is suggesting the 7 percent goal, but is accepting comments on a range between 4 percent and 10 percent. 

The rule is scheduled to be published in December and comments are currently due Feb. 7; however, ABC requested an extension Jan. 10, in order to give construction contractors the appropriate amount of time to analyze the regulations, which could cost federal contractors more than $81 million, annually.
