Congress Passes Year-End Tax Compromise, Delays Spending Cuts

Both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives Jan. 1 passed legislation to permanently extend Bush-era tax policies for most income levels, softening the blow of the fiscal cliff after allowing individual rates to expire for nearly 24 hours.

Two New Taxes in Health Care Law Become Effective Jan. 1, 2013

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department issued proposals that will implement two taxes in the health care law on Jan. 1, 2013: the onerous 3.8 percent Net Investment Income Tax and the 0.9 percent Additional Medicare Tax. Don’t Raise Taxes on Businesses, Groups Tell Congress

ABC joined 39 other organizations Nov. 27 in sending a letter to leaders in the Senate and the House urging them to avert the looming fiscal cliff of expiring tax provisions and automatic spending cuts that will effectively raise taxes on the majority of small businesses next year.

Obama Shuts Out Small Businesses From Fiscal Cliff Talks

President Barack Obama will be holding a summit Nov. 16 at the White House with congressional and corporate leaders to discuss the impending year-end tax increases and spending cuts, known as the fiscal cliff. In a Nov. 14 statement, ABC expressed concern over the troubling exclusion of small businesses from the summit.

Health Care Law Employer Reporting Required On 2012 W-2 Forms

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires employers that issue more than 250 W-2 forms to report the cost of health care coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan on each employee’s 2012 W-2 form, which generally are required to be provided to employees in January 2013.  

ABC Calls For Bipartisan Legislative Action On Impending Fiscal Cliff
