ABC Tells Fox Business Tax Reform Will Spur Construction Hiring

Any additional dollar that can stay in a construction company's cash flow can be invested in hiring and retaining talented workers. That was one of the messages ABC President and CEO Mike Bellaman conveyed this week during two live Fox Business Network appearances, as the House Ways and Means Committee unveiled a bill that reforms the tax code. 

Rules on Temporary Workers Means Increased Costs for Small Businesses

The Departments of Homeland Security and Labor released two H-2B regulations April 29 that will affect employers utilizing the H-2B program. The regulations include a final rule determining the wage methodology for temporary non-agricultural workers under the H-2B visa program, and an interim final rule (IFR) that includes a new employer registration process, increased recruitment and oversight, requirements for guaranteed pay, additional fees, and similar payment for corresponding U.S. workers.

Small Construction Businesses Lead the Way

Last month the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy released a report analyzing the economic significance of small businesses in the United States. The report revealed that construction is among the industry sectors in the U.S. economy most dominated by small businesses with 84% of those who work in the industry working for a small business, defined as a business employing fewer than 500 people.

SBA Adjusts Monetary-Based Small Business Size Standards For Construction

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced an interim final rule June 12 that will adjust monetary-based small business size standards to account for inflation. The rule will go into effect July 14 and the SBA is accepting comments from the public until August 11. 

HHS Delays SHOP Online Enrollment for Small Employers

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department (HHS) Nov. 27 announced that online enrollment for small businesses in the federally-facilitated Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace will be delayed one year until November 2014.
